Faust (1926 silent film with live organ score)

Silent films of the 1920s were never actually silent. Theatres hired an organist to play the score live, and this screening brings that back. F. W. Murnau's Faust premiered in 1926 and retells the old German legend of a scholar who trades his soul to the demon Mephistopheles, with Emil Jannings as the devil and the stark, shadowy look of German Expressionism. At two million reichsmarks it was the most expensive film Germany had ever made. For the centennial, Chris Maric has written a new score that reworks existing classical pieces, and he plays all of it on the Allen Theatre Organ, an instrument that can imitate a whole orchestra.
