Dreams of Bollywood (Calgary Phil world premiere)

Bollywood is Mumbai's Hindi-language film industry, known for big musical set pieces, and this concert turns that style into a staged show. Conductor Daniel Black and choreographer Rameez Karim spent more than two years creating it, and Calgary gets the world premiere. The story follows revellers at a folk-dance celebration who fall asleep and wake in a dream land of peacocks. Karim's Veils of Bollywood Dance Company performs barefoot, singers Vidita Kanniks and Reeshabh Purohit and tabla player Shawn Mativetsky join the orchestra, and the score mixes new work with arranged hits by Pritam and A.R. Rahman, the Oscar-winning composer of Slumdog Millionaire.
