Calgary International Film Festival (Citywide film festival)
Eleven days, five cinemas, one free Monday
CIFF is Alberta's largest film festival, and its 27th edition runs 11 days with more than 200 features and short films at The GRAND, Globe Cinema, Plaza Theatre, Scotiabank Theatre Chinook and Contemporary Calgary. The festival opened Thursday with the Alberta premiere of A Long Winter, Andrew Haigh's film shot around Calgary, and the lineup includes new work from directors such as Pedro Almodóvar, Martin McDonagh and Mike Leigh. CIFF says it is only the third festival in the world, after Cannes and New York, to screen James Gray's Paper Tiger. Servus Free Movie Monday gives away 1,000 free tickets on September 28.
