Alberta Biodiversity Festival
Meet a peregrine falcon, feed hatchery trout
The Alberta Biodiversity Festival is a family nature day run by the Calgary Zoo's conservation arm with the province, and its fifth year ends Saturday at Bow Habitat Station, the provincial fish hatchery and nature centre in southeast Calgary. Kids can meet Vinny, a peregrine falcon, the fastest animal on Earth in a dive, feed thousands of rainbow trout and see more than 20 Alberta fish species. At one station, visitors use microscopes to identify fish parasites the way researchers do. Alberta Wildfire brings a van with gear to try on, and Parks Canada covers species at risk. Tickets are timed in half-hour slots, so buy ahead. Admission is $5 and kids 3 and under are free.
